Canine Parvo Virus (Parvovirus)
Canine Parvo Virus is a highly contagious disease, with characteristic symptoms
of bloody Diarrhoea, which can be fatal. Parvo Virus can over take a dog
within hours of the first symptoms and result in death within 48 -72
hours. Vaccinations of dogs have helped to control the disease although
in rare cases dogs who have been vaccinated against Parvo Virus have still contracted
the disease. There are several variations of the disease but it is most
referred to as CPV-2 (Canine Parvo Virus - variation 2).
How parvo virus is spread.
Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease which can be spread through
contact with the feces of infected dogs and every day objects such as
clothing, shoes, crates or equipment. It is also believed that the
disease can also be transmitted through rodents and insects.
Symptoms of Canine Parvo Virus
Canine Parvo Virus has a variety of symptoms which can include the following:
Treatment of Canine Parvo Virus
There is no treatment that actually kills the virus. Treatment is given to reduce the effects of the disease such
as replacing fluids via a drip, controlling vomiting and diarrhea and a scrupulous
cleaning regime with heavy duty anti-viral disinfectants.
Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent secondary infections. The virus
can live for many months and it is therefore necessary to clean all
surfaces thoroughly with the disinfectants.
Parvo virus vaccinations
All dogs should be given Parvo virus vaccinations starting at 8 weeks old.
The Vaccinations should then be given yearly for life to prevent the
occurrence of this disease.
